Sphalerite is a sulfide of zinc mineral.
Sphalerite also known as zinc blende, black-jack and Ruby Sphalerite is a zinc sulfide mineral that crystallizes in the form of masses, botryoidal, cubes, tetrahedral crystals, and dodecahedral crystals. Its most commonly silver and grey, but can also be seen as red, black, yellow, brown, green, from the iron oxide inclusions and transparently colourless though this is very rare. Sphalerite is the most important ore when it comes to extracting Zinc. Around 95% of all Zinc is extracted from Sphalerite ore.
Sphalerite related minerals are galena, chalcopyrite, magnetite, arsenopyrite and lellingite, in addition to zinc, sphalerite is an ore of cadmium, gallium, germanium, and indium.
MoHs Hardness Scale 3.5-4. Sphalerite is a softer more brittle mineral that will fracture more easily then the harder minerals such as quartz, making this crystal more commonly sold in its natural formations. Though with great care sphalerite has been made into magnificent pieces of jewellery.
Sphalerite was discovered in 1847 by E.F. Glocker and was named after the Greek word meaning 'treacherous', like most minerals during this time period, crystals that looked similar were just called under the same name. Sphalerite got its name from it constantly being confused with Galena. Its very common to find Sphalerite formed with a variety of minerals, Pyrite, Fluorite, Galena, Dolomite, Calcite and Quartz.
